APACHE DROPOUT

APACHE DROPOUT
Apache Dropout CASSETTE
Magnetic South

The band's own description of themselves as "lysergic garage boogie mayhem" is embedded into my mind so much that I won't try to redefine them, and it's accurate anyway. This is their debut full-length, also available on LP, recorded and released by the Bloomington studio/label Magnetic South. This is an awesome debut by a hardworking band that we're proud to have locally, that will hopefully catch on worldwide soon.

CASSETTE - $4 + postage

Recess Records

THE ARRIVALS
Volatile Molotov LP
Recess Records

Newest release from a band that came into their own some time ago and now continue to release solid, huge-sounding punk albums with an ear for melody and an eye on the bigger picture, unafraid to celebrate the human spirit's resilience in dark times. Expansive punk rock played tight as a drum.

THE BANANAS

THE BANANAS
A Slippery Subject LP
Recess Records

The sophomore LP from cult-favorite CA punk rock band that really defines the pop-punk genre for many. Snotty, catchy, witty, dancy and their own patented ability to turn on a dime from brash garage verses to hopeful singalong choruses.

BRAINWORMS Brainworms II: Swear To Me

BRAINWORMS
Brainworms II: Swear To Me LP
Rorschach Records

Newest and last LP from this Richmond band - Brainworms continues to write some of the most interesting music of any band today. You'll play this again and again because there's so much going on, all coalescing beautifully as to avoid chaos and pack a big punch. New guitarist Josh Small makes his seamless entrance into the band on this, their first proper full-length.

THE BROKEDOWNS / SASS DRAGONS

THE BROKEDOWNS / SASS DRAGONS
Split 7"
Let's Pretend Records

Brokedowns burn barns with the first track, get anthemic and Midwestern with the second, and cover The Breeders with the third - I can't complain! Sass Dragons hit a high mark with the catchy "Don't Swear To God..." - good pop beyond their loveable dick and fart jokes.

DEAD DOG

DEAD DOG

New LP from Athens power-rock trio Dead Dog! This 2nd LP is punk as hell, catchy, noisy, and awesome. This band is more solid than ever and keeps writing classics.

DEAD DOG

DEAD DOG
S/T Cassette
Let's Pretend Records

The debut Dead Dog album is available on cassette. I've always enjoyed the cassette format for this band, ever since buying one of their cassingles from them on tour. This band started off with a bang, and this is proof. Absolutely necessary!

Holopaw - O Glory, O Wilderness LP

HOLOPAW
Oh Glory, Oh Wilderness LP
Obscurist Press

This is a real indie-rock epic of sorts that shames its contemporaries with its artful and graceful approach. We're biased, though, having released its 7" counterpart, which was really a mere introduction to what lies within the full-length record. Members of Ugly Cassanova, FIYA, and many Gainesville mainstays collaborated to create this work. Pitchfork gave it an 8! Hear a track.

Jack Palance Band - Let's Get This Shit Underway

JACK PALANCE BAND
Let's Get This Shit Underway LP
Dead Broke Records

Anyone looking to unpack the Chattanooga history and mystery should be sure to grab this, available now on LP for the first time. Members of this classic outfit went onto Future Virgins and Hidden Spots. This is like a primer on the region's trademark sound and holds up well today!

Killer Dreamer - 1,000 Years of Servitude LP+CD

KILLER DREAMER
1,000 Years of Servitude LP+CD LP
Razorcake Records

At times a visceral, raw punk band that sounds frozen in the late 80's, other times there are Bananas-type singalongs and anthems. Razorcake doesn't make forays into releasing music often, so you know it's worth it when they do. LP comes with CD!

LANDLORD Beneath The Wheel LP

LANDLORD
Beneath The Wheel LP
Recess Records

This new Landlord album confirms everything we've always known about the band, mostly that they are writing some of the best pop and rock songs of anyone right now. That's a vague description because the band encompasses so much of the greatness of each of the past 4 decades, it's a lot to unpack. While they really took their time and got great takes on this album, they maintain their tasteful "less is more" approach and just packed this thing with solid songs.

LANDLORD S/T 7in

LANDLORD
Landlord 7"
Dead Broke Records

This 4 song Landlord 7" captures the band's patented basement pop sound, recorded live at the Magnetic South basement studio in their hometown of Bloomington, IN. Some nice reverb helps trip this out, and any rawness just reveals the strength of the songs themselves. Side A bears multiple repeats!

LANDLORD

LANDLORD
No Matter Where You Live LP
Let's Pretend

Finally! First a CD-R, then cassette, now on LP at last thanks to B'town's own Let's Pretend Records. It's been remastered by Mike @ Russian Recording, and the covers come in a variety of colors, since they've been silkscreened and spraypainted onto painted-over used record jackets. Some old-school pro DIY. I got chills when I put this on and heard "Small Town" start up as this was a definite soundtrack to moving here, and these 11 songs were what led us to offer to release the next album before even hearing it. This is a must for Landlord fans like us - so many classics!

Lenguas Larguas

Lenguas Largas
Lenguas Largas LP
Recess Records

This album was a real treat to discover. It's always nice to have zero expectations about a record when you put it on and then be really floored by what you hear. This is some brand of psych-rock on the experimental side of the genre, unafraid to take risks and create something that's miles away from just reviving the genre. Spacey at times, straight forward rock n' roll at other times. Something about this reminds me of the first time I heard Jane's Addiction.

MT. GIGANTIC, Gleanings & Gatherings

MT. GIGANTIC
Gleanings & Gatherings LP
Harlan Records

Complex, orchestral punk from Bloomington circa 2006. Jason Williams, Justin Vollmar, Justin Rhody, Matt Tobey and Erin Tobey are on this recording. Like Behead the Prophet NLSL meets early Danielson family.

OLD GROWTH S/T LP

OLD GROWTH
Old Growth LP
Bakery Outlet Records

The first of 3 full-lengths now by Old Growth, a very underrated melodic rock group with the tiniest of country influence to it. Members of 12 Hour Turn and Science of Yabra demonstrate excellent songwriting here and drive it home with catchy melodies, kinda like a grittier Gin Blossoms. Solid all the way through! Hear a track.

PINK RAZORS First Degree 7

PINK RAZORS
First Degree 7"

Three gut-punches of punk and melody captured right when the band's original lineup was playing at their best. MRR said it reminded them of The Misfits - we'll take it!

PINK RAZORS Waiting to Wash Up CD

PINK RAZORS
Waiting to Wash Up CD
Robotic Empire

To date, still the most random thing released on this label known mostly for heavier music, but it wasn't like we had other offers. The LP is out of print and all that remains is a huge backstock of CD's that the label recently sent our way to free up room in their distro. At a super-low price, help yourself to the last copies of this polarizing pop-punk time piece.

THE REACTION

THE REACTION
We Have Nothing to Lose But Boredom 10"
Let's Pretend Records

"10 songs, 10 inches. Songs range from driving GARAGE PUNK to clatterous mayhem to free group improvisation to gentle ballads about hurricanes. Although diverse, WE HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BUT BOREDOM never loses it's flow. Featuring members of 50 MILLION and THE KIRBY GRIPS!"

Shang-A-Lang

SHANG-A-LANG
Summertime 7"
Let's Pretend Records

Songs seemingly pulled from the pop-punk ether, such that you can't imagine a world where they didn't already exist. Shang-A-Lang perform with feeling and sincerity and are top-notch among bands playing this type of music today. Full color art by Ben Snakepit.

SOLID PONY S/T LP

SOLID PONY
Life's Gonna Eat Us LP/CD
Bakery Outlet Records

Take a trip back in time to the very first Bakery Outlet release. It will be a laid-back, mellow trip to the beach with a few beers, friends, and guitars with music to match. Think a sun-soaked Guided By Voices. A release worthy of starting a kick-ass record label. Hear a track.

SPOKESMEN

SPOKESMEN
Spokesmen CDep
Let's Pretend Records

It would be difficult to not recommend this for fans of Hot Snakes since the influence is strong, but the band ventures elsewhere too, always with great success. This is the 7-song debut from this well-kept secret of Carbondale, IL, who share members with the band Parlor. This is now out-of-print and there were only 300 copies made. Don't pass on this, srsly. Hear some tracks.

Stop It!! Self Made Maps

STOP IT!!
Self Made Maps CD
Robotic Empire

We had no idea what this band would sound like when we decided to start it, but what resulted was something like Fugazi that got spacier as well as more spastic, not too far-fetched for Richmond VA in 2002. When I listen to it now, I still hear the sounds of my favorite musicians I've played with and the noises we could create just by jamming at practice. We experimented a lot with dual-drumming on this album, which gives it a primitive and urgent feeling that still sounds fresh to me. I haven't played in a band like this since, and I really miss it! Brendan went on to play guitar in Brainworms and I currently play drums in Fat Shadow.

Street Eaters / Severance Package

STREET EATERS / SEVERANCE PACKAGE
SPLIT 7"
Dead Broke Records

A fine offering of punk singles from Dead Broke, Dirt Cult, and Lost Cat Records. Street Eaters features the singer from The Fleshies and both bands are from the Bay Area, CA. If you like full-fledged attitude rock with smarts, you'll dig these tunes.

TILTWHEEL Battle Hymns For The Recluse Youth LP+CD

TILTWHEEL
Battle Hymns for the Recluse Youth LP + CD
Razorcake Records

This is a solid collection of Tiltwheel 7"s and singles and would be a great starting point for anyone unfamiliar with the band. If you're a fan of melodic 90's pop-punk, this is a fine artifact. LP comes with CD!

TRUE STERE0 - S/T 7inch

TRUE STEREO
S/T 7"
Dead Broke Records

Members of Future Virgins, Queerwolf, Hidden Spots, and ADD/C spent their youth cultivating high-quality raw and honest punk rock in Chattanooga, TN. Now, they begin anew as men and debut a solid, confident, punk 7inch that takes more cues from classic rock than power-pop. Really blown away by this one!

THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD TO CANDYLAND

THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD TO CANDYLAND
Knows Your Sins LP
Recess Records

The follow-up to the phenomenal debut album "Bird Roughs" does not disappoint. More instrumentation beefs up more aburdist surf party songs, reminiscent of The Clean, but cementing the fact that URTC will leave their own legacy on garage rock.

LP - $10 + postage

Dead Broke Records

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD TO CANDYLAND / TULSA / KILLER DREAMER / THE REACTION

Universe

UNIVERSE
Passenger CD

Members of Soophie Nun Squad, Tem Eyos Ki, and Good Luck bring you a quality debut that brings to mind mid-90's Ebullition Records hardcore and fantasy metal at the same time. Hear some tracks.

VACATION

VACATION
Dream Dad 7"
Let's Pretend Records

This comes off like well-done Whoah-Oh pop-punk, but there's some atypical guitar playing for the genre that brings more of a 90s alt rock feel. The whole thing is sped up and played with punk energy and grit. Highly enjoyable songs from a hard-working young band.

7" - $3 + postage

VACATION

VACATION
S/T LP
Let's Pretend Records

Debut LP, and already evolved hugely from their first tape and 7". They're writing catchier, better-developed songs and controlling the chaos that surrounds them. It's recorded better, rocks harder, and feels like more of a complete thought than their earlier stabs. I should shut up and just say that this is crazy good!
